FIBER OPTIC DIVISION / UNDERGROUND CREW FOREMAN

Responsibilities

CREW FOREMAN OCCUPY THE FIRST SUPERVISORY TIER, RANKING ABOVE WORKERS BUT BELOW FOREMEN AND CONSTRUCTION MANAGERS. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SUCCESS OF A CREW WORKING ON ONE CONSTRUCTION SITE WORKING IN ONE DISCIPLINE INITIALLY. AS EXPERIENCE IS GAINED, CREW LEADERS MAY PROGRESS TO FOREMAN LEVEL, SUPERVISING PROJECTS INVOLVING MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES AND CREWS.

A FOREMAN’S ROLE TYPICALLY INVOLVES:

PREPARE FOR THE PROJECT

COORDINATE WITH OTHER CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS SUCH AS PROJECT MANAGERS, THE CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULER, CONSTRUCTION MANAGERS, AND ASSIGNED FOREMAN ON MULTI-DISCIPLINE JOB SITES BEFORE CONSTRUCTION WORK STARTS.

REVIEW DOCUMENTS IN THE JOB FOLDER TO BE COMPLETELY FAMILIAR WITH ALL ASPECTS OF THE JOB.

LEAD TEAM OF ASSIGNED CREW MEMBERS TO DEVELOP THE WORK PRIORITIES, SCHEDULE AND STRATEGY FOR EFFICIENT AND TIMELY COMPLETION OF ALL TASKS.

ASSESS SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THE JOB AND ASSIGN CREW MEMBERS TO JOB TASKS.

DIRECT CREW MEMBERS TO COLLECT AND LOAD ALL MATERIAL, EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS REQUIRED FOR THE PROJECT.

PLAN TO PREVENT PROBLEMS ON THE SITE. MAKE SURE ALL VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT ARE INSPECTED AND ARE IN PROPER WORKING ORDER BEFORE LEAVING THE GARAGE. ALL PERMITS, JHA, TOOLBOX TALKS, AND OTHER REQUIRED PAPERWORK IS IN THE JOB FOLDER AND THE FOLDER IS IN THE TRUCK GOING TO THE JOB SITE.

AT EVERY PHASE OF EVERY JOB ENSURE WORK ENVIRONMENT, JOB SITE, TRUCKS, EQUIPMENT AND CREWS ARE NEAT AND ORDERLY.

ARRIVE AT THE JOB SITE

ASSEMBLE CREW. REVIEW AND DOCUMENT IN A NEAT AND ORDERLY FASHION ALL ASPECTS OF THE JOB FOLDER, STARTING WITH COMPLETION OF THE JHA, DISCUSSING DAILY TOOLBOX TALKS. COMMUNICATE SAFETY PROCEDURES TO EMPLOYEES, OFFERS SAFETY TRAINING. INSPECT WORK ENVIRONMENT AND EQUIPMENT TO VERIFY NO HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS EXIST.

COORDINATES PROCEDURES FOR VISITOR ENTRY ONTO WORKSITE FOR REVIEW OF JHA, TOOLBOX TALKS AND OBTAINING SIGNATURES.

OUTLINE SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY WITH TASKS TO BE COMPLETED WITHIN THE DAY’S TIMELINE.

ASSIGN TASKS TO CREW MEMBERS.

ENSURE ALL PRE-CONSTRUCTION PICTURES/DOCUMENTATION ARE ASSIGNED AND COMPLETED.

REVIEW ANY CREW DEVELOPMENTAL PLANS AND ASSIGN TASKS FOR THE DAY. TRAIN NEW WORKERS.

MONITOR PROJECT

BE THE PRIMARY CONTACT FOR CREW MEMBERS ON ALL TECHNICAL AND

CONSTRUCTION ISSUES RELATED TO ASSIGNED TASKS.

MANAGE CREW MEMBERS ON REQUIRED TASKS. INSTRUCT CREW MEMBERS ON PROPER WORK METHODS AND STANDARDS IF NEEDED.

PARTICIPATE WITH THE CREW IN THE FIELD TO COMPLETE WORK AS REQUIRED.

MAKE SAFETY INSPECTIONS OF THE SITE WHEN WORK IS UNDERWAY AND ENSURE REGULATIONS RELATING TO HEALTH, SAFETY AND THE ENVIRONMENT (HSE) ARE ADHERED TO.

ENSURE ALL VISITORS ARE APPROPRIATELY ACCLIMATED TO THE JOB SITE.

MONITOR WORK QUALITY AND STOP WORK TO CORRECT PROBLEMS AND SHODDY WORKMANSHIP.

ENSURE CREW ORGANIZES TASKS, MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT TO INSURE SMOOTH WORKFLOW.

COMMUNICATE WITH A RANGE OF PEOPLE INCLUDING THE CONSTRUCTION MANAGER OR THE FOREMAN, CLIENT, SUBCONTRACTORS, SUPPLIERS, THE PUBLIC AND THE WORKFORCE.

CREW LEAD MEETS WITH THE CONSTRUCTION MANAGER OR THE FOREMAN ASSIGNED TO THE JOB TO REVIEW JOB GOALS AND PROGRESS.

REVISE THE PROJECT WHEN NECESSARY

ALTERS SCHEDULES TO MINIMIZE DOWN TIME. REASSIGNS WORKERS WHEN PROBLEMS ARISE.

WHEN THE SCHEDULE OR PROJECT IS CHANGED, REVISE SCHEDULE AS NEEDED, REORDERING TASKS OR ASSIGNMENTS SO THAT THE FINAL DEADLINE CAN STILL BE MET.

COMMUNICATE WITH THE CONSTRUCTION MANAGER OR THE FOREMAN ANY CHANGES THAT REQUIRE ADDITIONAL MANPOWER, OVERTIME OR CHANGE OF SCOPE OF WORK.

CLOSING THE JOB AND REPORTING PROJECT STATUS

REPORT WORKPLACE INJURIES, SAFETY INCIDENTS, CAUSES FOR CONSTRUCTION DELAYS TO CONSTRUCTION MANAGER OR THE FOREMAN.

ENSURE ALL VEHICLE INSPECTION REPORTS ARE PROPERLY DOCUMENTED AND TURNED IN.

VERIFY ALL REQUIRED IFTA REPORTING IS COMPLETE.

VERIFY ALL DAILY PRODUCTION FORMS AND JOB COMPLETE CHECKLISTS ARE COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED.

COMMUNICATE JOB STATUS WITH CONSTRUCTION MANAGER OR THE FOREMAN AT THE END OF EACH WORKDAY.

ENSURE ALL TIMESHEETS ARE ACCURATE AND RETURNED AT THE END OF THE DAY.

ASSIGN AND VERIFY ALL JOB CLOSING PICTURES, RED-LINE DRAWINGS AND OTHER JOB DOCUMENTATION ARE COMPLETE.

CREW DEVELOPMENT

FOLLOW ANY DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR CREW MEMBERS AND PROVIDE INTENTIONAL EXPOSURE TO NEW ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCES.

REPORT DEVELOPMENTAL EXPERIENCES TO CONSTRUCTION MANAGER. PROVIDE INPUT FOR PERFORMANCE REVIEWS FOR ASSIGNED CREW LEADERS.

OFTEN WORKS WITH LESS EXPERIENCED CREW MEMBERS TO DEMONSTRATE CORRECT PROCEDURES AND BEST PRACTICES IN THEIR DISCIPLINE OF EXPERTISE.

COMPLETES SPECIAL PROJECTS OR OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

REQUIREMENTS

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, INDUSTRY AND FIELD PROJECT EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.

DIRECTIONAL DRILL FOREMEN HAVE TYPICALLY BEEN TRAINED ON THE JOB. THEY REQUIRE FIELD PROJECT EXPERIENCE AND DEMONSTRATE COMPETENCY IN AT LEAST DIRECTIONAL DRILLING.

VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE. CDL PREFERRED.

ABILITY TO READ ENGINEERING DRAWINGS, PRINTS AND TECHNICAL DOCUMENTS FOR OSP FACILITIES.

ABILITY TO DRAW PRINTS OR SKETCHES AND PROVIDE FIELD NOTES DESCRIBING OSP FACILITIES

PROFICIENCY IN THE USE OF SMARTPHONES FOR TEXTING AND OTHER FIELD COMMUNICATIONS.

KNOWLEDGE AND APPLICATION OF BEST PRACTICES IN THE FIELD TO MEET TECHNOLOGY AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS.

MUST BE ABLE TO OPERATE ALL EQUIPMENT NECESSARY TO COMPLETE TASKS ASSIGNED TO THE CREW.

CREW LEADERS NEED TO BE FORWARD PLANNERS, WITH GOOD PEOPLE SKILLS AND THE ABILITY TO PRESENT IDEAS AND NEGOTIATE. INDEPENDENT PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS ARE ESSENTIAL SINCE PROJECTS ARE OFF SITE. MUST BE CUSTOMER-FOCUSED

ABILITY TO ASSIGN AND SUPERVISE WORK TASKS, PROVIDE INSTRUCTION, AND INSPIRE CONFIDENCE TO MOTIVATE CREW TO SAFETY, EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY ON ALL ASSIGNED PROJECTS.

BASIC SKILL IN WRITING ROUTINE REPORTS AND DOCUMENTS.

PROFICIENT IN ALL FIELD ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS, FROM COMPLETION OF SAFETY EVALUATIONS AND VEHICLE/EQUIPMENT INSPECTIONS TO BE THE OFFICIAL TIMEKEEPER ON ASSIGNED PROJECTS.

CREW LEADS MUST FOSTER RESPECT OF THEIR TEAM BOTH AS A LEADER AND TECHNICAL EXPERT.

MUST FOSTER A SPIRIT OF TEAM COOPERATION IN SOLVING PROBLEMS.
